Active Release technique (ART) is a movement-based manual therapy soft tissue technique along with a specific deep tissue massage that addresses muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. It involves breaking up adhesions in the soft tissues by having the patient go through various motions while the doctor applies a very specific pressure to the area being treated. It has been proven to be highly effective in treating many repetitive overuse injuries or overly tight muscles.
ART is used for any population due to the fact that anyone and everyone has repetitive overuse injuries or overly tight muscles. For the purpose of this blog we are going to talk more specifically about what we commonly see in runners.
Overuse injuries commonly seen in runners
Plantar Fasciitis - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is Plantar Aponeurosis.
Shin Splints - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is Tibialis Anterior.
Achilles Tendinopathy - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is Achilles Tendon attachment sites.
IT Band Syndrome - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is the Tensor Fasciae Latae and Iliotibial Band.
Runners Knee - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is Quadriceps tendon.
Patellar Tendinopathy - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is Patellar Tendon.
Hip Flexor Tendinopathy - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is the Iliacus and Psoas.
Hamstring Tightness or Tendinopathy - the most common muscle/fascia we work for this is the Biceps Femoris.
ART can help identify the cause of your pain and restore function to surrounding fascia/muscles/ligaments/etc that are affected from these conditions.
ART treatments will result in:
Better function
Less pain
Less tightness
More range of motion
Less tension around joints
Runners that deal with these common overuse injuries and any other injury will require treatments in order to return to full function. The best news about ART is that most treatments are quick and will see significant results within 4-6 sessions.
