You're A Deranged One

If you have been treated by Dr. Matt then he might have said you're deranged. Well yes my friends all say that about me... but what does it mean in terms of my health!?!....

The medical term Derangement Syndrome comes from the McKenzie Method which is one of the main techniques we utilize here at Pro Motion Chiropractic. There are 4 main classifications to this technique with Derangement being by far the most popular. The Derangement Syndrome involves some kind of mechanical obstruction to movement within the affected joint. Now this can range from a simple "kink within the chain" analogy or to something slightly more complex being a disc bulge or herniation in the posterior/posterolateral or lateral direction.

After taking initial history we focus on how movements and positions may affect your symptoms. Each syndrome is addressed according to its unique nature, with specific mechanical and functional procedures, including repeated movements and sustained postures. We will move you in various directions to see how this affects the joint. For spinal related complaints you can see rapid changes in 50-70% of patients (depending on acute vs chronic conditions). Over time pain should move from a distal to a more proximal location (centralization) in response to treatment meaning that by doing the instructed movements/exercise the pain will retreat to the midline of the spine. (see picture below) Most people will notice one or more of the following with their chief complaint(s): a decrease in intensity, a decrease in frequency, an increase in range of motion, change in location and or easier to perform daily activities.

This is NOT limited to spinal related complaints as it is used for extremity related complaints as well. Yes although your shoulder/elbow/wrist/knee/foot hurts or feels restricted this could be due to a mechanical obstruction of the spine! This also does not necessarily mean it has to be 100% spine related and 0% extremity joint related, some cases involve both components.
